Course Description

The course aims to expose the students to philosophical ideas and enable them to apply these ideas in addressing educational problems. It also aims to develop in students a deeper understanding of themselves, others, and the world around them so they can be active, responsible, and effective contributors in social and educational transformation.

The course also aspires to provide students with the required competencies that enable them to think, reflect, wonder, and flourish as responsible and successful individuals.

General Objectives

By the end of the course, the students, inter alia, will be able to:

  • Analyze philosophical thoughts in order to help them deal with the complexities and problems of the Philippine educational system; and
  • Broaden their perspectives on the implications of philosophies in life situations, in curriculum development and the educational system.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, the students are expected to be able to do the following:

EXPECTED GRADUATES ATTRIBUTES LEARNING OUTCOMES

A- Become responsible leaders in education equipped with critical consciousness as well as social awareness and deeper understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of education. 

Students will be able to 

  • Understand the meaning of philosophy, including its origin, nature and value;
  • Discuss the contributions of philosophers in each major period in the history of philosophy;
  • Enumerate some philosophical views and their educational implications;
  • Discuss the aims of education in terms of the following: naturalism, idealism, realism, pragmatism, and existentialism;
  • Discuss the bases in building a philosophy of education;
  • Explain the nature of the human person according to the different philosophical views;
  • Discuss the philosophical foundations of Philippine education; 
  • Analyze philosophical thoughts and their applications to educational problems.

B-Become critical and analytic thinkers in terms of decision-making and doing situational analysis in education. 

Students will be able to make sound judgment in addressing a particular issue in education that demands the rigours of philosophical analysis.

C-Become problem solvers through developing their own matured way of looking at issues in education that affect them and the society as a whole. 

Student will be able to spot issues in education which demand serious consideration through philosophical analysis and address them through the knowledge, skills, and strategies that are learned in this course.

Final Course Output

As evidence of the attainment of the above learning outcomes, the students are required to do and submit an individual report presentation and a research paper submission on a specific issue in education, particular recent issues in education in the Philippines.
